A tip I sent in to Fine Homebuilding was converted into a video clip as part of Chuck Miller’s “There’s a Better Way…” blog on FineHomebuilding.com

Eww! Thanks! I was just about to upgrade my sharpening stone set up. Perfect timing.
Check out the diagram from the printed version which is more representative of what I built. (What Chuck shows in the video is geared for folks already at a job site and in need of a holder) For me it was 1/2″ birch ply (I rounded over the edges) and I used a pin nailer to pin down 1/4″ thick lauan plywood strips. I used 1″ pin nails that protruded the exact amount I wanted. My assembly table is topped with MDF and the pin nails grab in and barely leave any kind of mark. I made 2 sets of 3 holders (one for home and one for site work) for my india, hard arkansas and surgical black stones. If you set the filler blocks carefully and get a little bit of honing oil on the bottom of the stone it really suctions the stone down to the holder well. I also labeled each holder with a sharpie. Take care, -Bill
